Taking into consideration the negative impacts of climate change being felt by countries and regions with low-lying coastal elevation and population density centred around coastal cities and villages especially in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Dickson is concerned about the efficacy of mitigative and adaptative strategies bearing in mind the particular characteristics each region or country possesses, issues regarding sustainability of mitigative strategies in the long run and identification of socio-economic and cultural factors that influence rapid adoption of mitigative strategies in target areas. Poor funding is always cited as a detriment to coastal and ecosystem management, Dickson’s research is also looking at the possibility of raising funds through the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation Mechanisms set forth in the Kyoto protocol and increased participation in the international Carbon Market as mitigative strategies to be pursued on a country and regional level.
